What is the Dyson Airwrap?

This new, popular product has been trending everywhere on social media over the past few months and everyone is raving over it! The Dyson Airwrap is the ultimate styling tool combing blow drying, smoothing, and curling the air all in one! The idea is genius when it comes to styling hair and saving time. For some, blow drying and smoothing their hair can take hours. This revolutionary product has claimed to style hair through the "coanda effect" which means that the tool uses air going in certain directions to dry and style with no extreme heat. However, the price of this blow dryer is out of the water! On the Dyson website, it is priced at $549.99. Why would anyone spend this much money on a styling tool? Is it worth the money?

I am here to put this tool to the test! Is It worth the money, can it dry and curl hair at the same time with not using extreme heat? Let's find out if this Dyson Airwrap is a fab or a fail!

What comes in the box?

  • Dyson Airwrap styler base

  • Non-slip mat

  • 1.6 inch Airwrap barrels

  • 1.2 inch Airwrap barrels

  • Soft smoothing brush

  • Firm smoothing brush

  • Round volumizing brush

  • Pre-styling dryer

  • Filter cleaning brush

Styling

I used this tool on a mannequin head I had from cosmo school to show it better! This hair that I was working with has mega frizz and I wanted to put the Dyson to the test to see if it tames the frizz. I first started checking out the attachments and referred to the Dyson Airwrap tutorial that the pros released on TikTok.

  • The first step is to complete a rough dry with the pre-styler dryer

This tool has 3 heat settings, 3 air flow strength settings and a cool shot. The cool shot feature allows the hair to cool and set before being released off the tool or attachment.

  • After the rough dry, the Dyson pros suggests to use a smoothing brush to tame frizz and smooth the hair before using the curling barrels

The pre styler attachment worked great due to the air flow strength. The smoothing brush however didn't tame all of the frizz I was hoping for and left it not very smooth. This feature wasn't my favorite. If I wanted to leave my hair straight using this, I would probably have to go over it with a flat iron.

  • The last step for using all of the styling attachments is curling the hair with the curling barrels. This was difficult to get the first time and confusing with how many barrels there are. Each barrel has arrows pointing which way the air is blowing. If I wanted to create a curl going away from the face, I would use the barrel with the arrows pointing away from the face. There are numerous techniques to create a curl. I tried out two ways and they made the curl look the exact same.

The curling barrels was such a fun way to curl the hair but it took about 30 minutes for me to complete the whole head. I can curl my hair in about 15 minutes using just a curling iron, Grabbing a small one inch section the is about 90% dry, I held up the tool to the ends while holding the mid shaft. After the ends caught hold of the curling barrel, I slowly moved the tool towards the root while making sure that the hair stayed on the top of the barrel. Yes this attachment worked well using smaller sections but it did leave the curl frizzy and fell out of bounce in about an hour.

My final review

This tool did accomplish everything that it claims to do. It dried, smoothed (somewhat) and curled the hair. Did it take less time to use the airwrap then a curling iron? I personally think that it took the same amount of time if not longer to style the whole head. My favorite thing about this tool is the pre-styler drying due to the air flow strength it had and blew the hair dry in minutes. I was disappointed in the smoothing brushes and feel like they didn't do the job. The curling barrels were okay to me and it was hard to learn the technique. You could ultimately accomplish the same "Dyson Airwrap" look with a round brush and any curling hot tool.

FAB OR FAIL RATING:

FAIL!

I give this product a 6.5!

It is absolutely not worth the money! Yes it is a great blow dryer but there are other blow dryers and stylers that complete the same job while being hundreds of dollars cheaper. Do not spend your money on this $500 tool!
